HÉLÈNE SADOVEN (KIEV, UKRAINE 21. 05. 1894 – PARIS, FRANCE 13. 09. 1978)

 

 

 

 

She was a notable soprano who studied and debuted during World War I in Russia. In 1917, she left Russia, traveling through Finland to Paris. In Paris, she performed frequently at the Grand Opéra and the Opéra-Comique.

At the Grand Opéra, she made notable appearances, including in G. Verdi’s Aida in 1922, where she sang alongside Claudia Muzio. On June 3, 1922, she was featured in the premiere of I. Stravinsky’s Mavra. In 1923, she performed in Boris Godunov and Hérodiade, and in 1924, she took on the role of Dalila in C. Saint-Saëns’s Samson et Dalila.

She was a frequent guest at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo and the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona. In 1927, she joined the newly founded Opéra Russe in Paris, with whom she performed at La Scala, in London, the Netherlands, and South America. She also made a guest appearance at the Opera in Cairo in 1926.

In 1928, she performed in Vienna and Berlin, and the following year, she appeared in Madrid. In 1931, she was featured at the London Lyceum Theatre, where she participated in the English premieres of N. Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Czar’s Bride and Sadko. By 1938, she was performing at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels.
