Description

TIBOR DE MACHULA (KOLOZSVÁR, JUNE 30, 1912 – ABCOUDE, DECEMBER 18, 1982)

He studied cello with Adolf Schiffer in Budapest. At the age of 12, he made his debut as a soloist with the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra. He then toured Italy. At the age of 15, he was invited to continue his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia (USA) with Felix Salmond.

After three years in America he returned to Europe. He toured to South Africa, Scandinavia and the then Dutch East Indies.

In 1936 he was asked by conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler to become principal cellist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, where he remained for 11 years. From 1947 until his retirement in 1977 he was principal cellist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. In addition to his orchestral position, De Machula was active in various chamber music ensembles (such as the Concertgebouw String Quartet with Jan Damen, Jan Bresser and Klaas Boon) and as a soloist. He taught at the Muzieklyceum in Amsterdam.
