MÁRIA BASILIDES (ILOSVÁR, HUNGARY NOVEMBER 11, 1886 – BUDAPEST, HUNGARY SEPTEMBER 26, 1946)

She received her education at the Music Academy of Budapest. She made her stage debut in 1911 at the Volksoper in Budapest, appearing in Quo vadis? by Nouguès. In 1915, she was engaged by the National Opera of Budapest, where she gained such popularity that she became a lifelong member of the company in 1934. At this theater, she sang in the premiere of Székely fonó by Zoltán Kodály on April 24, 1932.

She also made successful guest appearances at the Berlin State Opera, the state operas in Dresden and Munich, the Opera in Prague, and the Antwerp Opera House. She toured Brussels (1929), The Hague (1929), and Bucharest, and gave notable concerts in Berlin (1927-1929) and London (1930). One of her final stage performances was in Budapest in 1945, where she portrayed the old countess in Pique Dame by Tchaikovsky.

Renowned as an outstanding concert singer, she performed in a cathedral concert at the Salzburg Festival in 1937. She was one of the early supporters of Hungarian folk music, rediscovered by Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, and had a significant impact on Hungary’s musical life. She also made a few recordings for Parlophone and HMV.
