Description

ROSETTE ANDAY (BUDAPEST, 12 DECEMBER, 1899 – VIENNA, 22 DECEMBER, 1977)

Born into a Jewish family, she began her musical journey as a violinist and quickly gained recognition as a child prodigy. However, her profound, sonorous contralto voice soon drew attention, leading her to pursue singing. She trained under Gyorgy Anthes at the Budapest Academy of Music and, in 1920, received a scholarship from the Opera House. Her talent caught the eye of Vienna Opera’s chief conductor, Franz Schalk, during the company’s 1921 Budapest tour, and he offered her a contract at the Vienna Opera House, where she performed for nearly 40 years.

Her career spanned nearly every major opera and concert stage in Europe. Known for her exceptional portrayals of roles such as Dalila, Carmen, Azucena, Ulrica, Orpheus, Waltraute in Götterdämmerung, and Erda in Das Rheingold, she was also highly regarded for her interpretation of Richard Strauss’ songs. Her legacy as a celebrated contralto and versatile performer remains significant in opera history.
