MARGIT ANGERER (BORN “MARGIT RUPP”: BUDAPEST, 6 NOVEMBER, 1895 – LONDON, 31 JANUARY, 1978)

 

 

 

 

She studied at the Fodor Conservatory and the Music Academy of Budapest. Soon after her debut in Budapest, she was engaged by the Vienna State Opera in 1927, where she enjoyed great success until 1938. In 1930, 1933, and 1935, she performed at the Salzburg Festival as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier. In 1933, she sang the role of Aithra in Richard Strauss’s Die ägyptische Helena in Salzburg. From Vienna, she undertook successful guest performances and concert tours. She made guest appearances at the Brno Theater in 1927 and at Covent Garden Opera in London in 1931 (as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier). Her stage repertoire includes the title role in C.W. Gluck’s Iphigenie in Aulis, Leonore in G. Verdi’s La forza del destino, Lisa in P. Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, Blanchefleur in Kuhreigen by W. Kienzl, and Helge in Das Herz by Hans Pfitzner. From 1938, she lived in London, where she worked primarily as a concert soprano. She also performed under the name Margit Angerer-Schenker.
