KOLOMAN VON PATAKY (ALSÓ LENDVA, HUNGARY, NOVEMBER 14, 1896 – HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA, APRIL 28, 1964)

Koloman von Pataky initially pursued a military career, graduating from the military academy in Budapest. After World War I, he turned to music, studying at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. He made his debut in 1921 at the Urban Opera (Városi Színház) in Budapest as the Duke in Rigoletto before joining the Budapest National Opera.

In 1926, Pataky was engaged by the Vienna State Opera, where he remained until 1938, gaining recognition for his roles such as the Duke in Rigoletto, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Alvaro in La forza del destino, the Italian singer in Der Rosenkavalier, and Masaniello in La Muette de Portici. His success in Vienna led to guest appearances at major opera houses in Dresden (1927), Berlin, and Munich. In 1928, he performed at the Grand Opéra in Paris.

Pataky appeared at the Salzburg Festival from 1929 to 1931, singing roles such as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, the Italian singer in Der Rosenkavalier, and Florestan in Fidelio. In 1936, he enjoyed great success at the Glyndebourne Festival as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni. He continued to perform internationally, appearing at La Scala in Milan as Hüon in Oberon (1939-1940) and at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome (1940-1941).

From 1935 to 1941, Pataky performed extensively in South America, particularly at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Opera in Santiago, Chile. He returned to the National Opera of Budapest in 1938 but left Hungary in 1946. He subsequently worked as a pedagogue in Santiago de Chile and later in Los Angeles, where he spent his final years.
