LICCO AMAR (BUDAPEST, HUNGARY, DECEMBER 4, 1891 – FREIBURG, GERMANY, JULY 19, 1959)

 

 

 

 

Licco Amar was the child of Macedonian merchant Michael Amar and Regina Strakosch. First he studied with Emil Baré at the Music Academy of his native city, then under Henri Marteau at the College of Music in Berlin. From 1912 to 1924 Henri Marteau took him on as second violinist in his string quartet. In 1912 He received the Mendelssohn Prize. From 1916 to 1920 he became concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker and changed from 1920 to 1923 to the National Theater in Mannheim. In 1922 he organized the Amar Quartet, which included Paul Hindemith, and was active until 1929 in the promotion of contemporary music. The composer dedicated his sonata Op. 31, No. 1 to him. He also promoted the composer Erich Walter Sternberg. In 1925 he married to Emmy Matterstock. Since 1933 the Nazi regime ruled Germany. As to being Jewish he was no longer able to work in Germany and emigrated to France and from there to Turkey, where from 1935 he was able to teach for twenty years at the Ankara Conservatory. In 1957 he taught at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg.
