EINAR KRISTJÁNSSON (REYKJAVIK, ICELAND, 24 NOVEMBER, 1910 – REYKJAVÍK, ICELAND, APRIL 24, 1966)
He initially came to Vienna to study commercial science, but later trained as a singer with Waldemar Staegemann in Dresden. After performing as a concert singer, he completed his training at the opera studio of the Dresden State Opera and made his debut there in 1933 as Elemer in Richard Strauss’s Arabella. His engagements included: Dresden State Opera (1933-1936), Stuttgart State Opera (1936-1938), Duisburg City Theater (1938-1942), and Hamburg State Opera (1942-1944). From 1949 to 1962, he was a member of the Royal Opera in Copenhagen. He made guest appearances at the German Opera House in Berlin in 1939, the Vienna State Opera in 1948, and from Copenhagen at the Stockholm Opera. He excelled in lyrical tenor roles, such as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Wilhelm Meister in A. Thomas’s Mignon, Tamino in The Magic Flute, and in Benjamin Britten’s operas The Rape of Lucretia and Albert Herring. One of his greatest successes was in 1949 in Copenhagen as Ferrando in Così fan tutte. In 1962, he returned to his native Iceland and taught at the Music Academy in Reykjavik.
