Description

IGOR GORIN (GRODEK, UKRAINE, OCTOBER 26, 1904 – TUCSON, USA, MARCH 24, 1982)

His real name was Ignatz Greenberg. He was born into a Jewish family, and they later moved to Vienna, where he studied medicine and sang in a choir consisting of doctors and medical students. He decided to train his voice and became a student of Victor Fuchs at the Vienna Conservatory (1925-1930). He made his debut in 1930 at the Vienna Volksoper, then performed at the Theater in Ustí nad Labem (1930-1931), at the Theater in Teplitz-Schönau (1931-1932), and at the Theater in Gablonz (1932-1933). He also made guest appearances at the Deutsches Theater in Prague.

In 1932, he emigrated to the USA, and in 1939, he became an American citizen. In the U.S., he first appeared on the radio under the stage name Charles Gorin and made his concert debut at the Hollywood Bowl in 1937. Concert appearances followed with major American orchestras, and in 1939, he toured Canada.

In the United States, he was relatively rarely heard on stage. He performed the role of Germont (with Mary Costa and John Alexander) in a single performance on February 10, 1964, at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and had previously appeared in five performances at the New York City Center Opera in autumn 1963 (as Rigoletto and also as Germont). He made guest appearances at opera houses in Chicago (again in 1942 as Germont), New Orleans, and Cincinnati. He appeared on American television in opera programs featuring Rigoletto and La Traviata. In 1959, he embarked on a large concert tour of Australia and New Zealand. He also appeared in several films, including Broadway Melody (1938).
