IRENE PAVLOSKA (MEZZO-SOPRANO) (SAINT-JEAN, QUEBEC, CANADA, FEBRUARY 17, 1889 – CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, UNITED STATES, FEBRUARY 12, 1962)

 

 

 

 

Her real name was Irene Levi Mesirow. In 1915, she made her debut at the Chicago Opera as Musetta in La Bohème, performing alongside the famous prima donna Nellie Melba. She remained active in Chicago until 1931, with brief interruptions during which she appeared in operettas and musical comedies. In 1917, she also sang at the Ravinia Summer Opera near Chicago. She performed both major and minor mezzo-soprano and soprano roles. On December 30, 1921, she sang the role of Princess Clarissa in the world premiere of Sergei Prokofiev’s L’amour des trois oranges in Chicago. She also appeared in the world premiere of Charles Wakefield Cadman’s A Witch of Salem in 1926, and in 1923 she took part in the premiere of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s fairytale opera The Snow Maiden.
