He studied at the Milan Conservatory and later specialized in Buffo roles with the pedagogue Cesari. He made his debut in 1896 at the Teatro Gaffurio in Lodi as Matteo in Fra Diavolo. Around the turn of the 20th century, he achieved significant success on leading Italian stages, particularly at La Scala, and from 1915 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. In 1913, he sang the role of Ford in Falstaff at La Scala. Since 1911, he had guest appearances with great success at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo. From 1914 to 1934, he frequently performed at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. He was also appreciated in South America, where he sang regularly. As early as 1910, he performed as Marcello in Puccini’s La Bohème at the Teatro dell’Opera in Buenos Aires. He appeared at Covent Garden in 1920, 1926, and 1927, singing the title role in the 1920 premiere of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi. He had previously created this role in the 1922 premiere at La Scala. He sang in the 1921 premiere of Mascagni’s Il piccolo Marat at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome (May 2, 1921), and in the 1924 premiere of Giordano’s La cena delle beffe at La Scala (December 20, 1924). He also appeared in Wolf-Ferrari’s Sly at La Scala on December 29, 1927. He continued to appear regularly at La Scala until his death and performed at the Arena di Verona in 1929 and 1931.
