GIUSEPPE MAGGI (ALESSANDRIA, 1865 – ?)

He made his debut in 1889 at the Teatro Politeama Facchinetti in Vercelli as Conte di Luna in Il Trovatore. In 1892, he appeared at the Teatro Grande of Brescia in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, and two years later, he performed in Rigoletto at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan. By 1894, he was already making guest appearances in Russia, where he sang in Moscow as part of an opera troupe organized by the Russian baritone and impresario Korsoff. His daughter, the later famous coloratura soprano Lucette Korsoff, debuted in 1894 with Giuseppe Maggi as her partner in Pergolesi’s La serva padrona. This opera troupe also participated in tours throughout Russia and Poland.

In 1900, he returned to Brescia, performing as Telramund in Lohengrin, and also sang in Bucharest in 1901. During the 1905-06 season, he was engaged to sing at the Teatro Albisu in Havana, where he performed leading baritone roles in Aida, Rigoletto, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, Tosca, I Puritani, Ernani, and Gounod’s Faust. In 1905, he made a guest appearance at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo as Riccardo in I Puritani, partnering with Amelia Pinkert and Alessandro Bonci.

In 1911, he toured North America with the Lombardi Opera Company, appearing primarily in California. In 1913, he performed in Alessandria in the opera Andrea del Sarto by Baravalle. He was married to the English singer Gladys Dode since 1900. He likely retired from the stage in 1913 and may have lived in England afterward, where he worked as a vocal pedagogue.
