MARIO SAMMARCO (PALERMO, 13 DECEMBER, 1867 – MILAN, 24 JANUARY, 1930)

 

 

 

 

Mario Sammarco was a distinguished Italian baritone, celebrated for his commanding stage presence and for creating important roles in the verismo repertoire.

He studied in Milan under Antonio Cantelli, and soon after completed his training, made his debut in Palermo as Valentin in Faust. In 1894, he appeared at the Teatro dal Verme in Milan in Puccini’s Le Villi, and the same year made his first appearance at La Scala. Two seasons later, he gained lasting renown when he created the role of Carlo Gérard in the world premiere of Umberto Giordano’s Andrea Chénier (1896).

Sammarco went on to appear in leading baritone roles in several other important premieres: Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Zazà (1900), Alberto Franchetti’s Germania (1902), and Victor Herbert’s Natoma (1911). His international career brought him to Covent Garden in London, to major theaters in South America, and to the United States, where he was frequently engaged by the Chicago and Philadelphia Opera companies, as well as the Manhattan Opera House in New York.

He was admired not only for his portrayals of Verdi’s great baritone roles—such as Rigoletto, Renato (Un ballo in maschera), and Germont (La Traviata)—but also for his interpretations of the new verismo parts that came to define the operatic stage of his generation. His Scarpia in Tosca and Michonnet in Adriana Lecouvreur were particularly acclaimed.

Sammarco remained active into the 1910s, admired as one of the foremost Italian baritones of his era. His career linked the traditions of Verdi with the emerging verismo school, and his participation in world premieres secured his place in operatic history.
