TAURINO PARVIS (TURIN, 15 SEPTEMBER, 1879 – BARCELONA, 9 MAY, 1957)

 

 

 

 

After studying in Milan with Vanni, his debut is believed to have taken place in 1900 at the Teatro Lirico in Rio de Janeiro as Kyoto in Mascagni’s Iris. The following year, in 1901, he sang as Marcello in Puccini’s La Bohème at the Teatro Carignano in Turin, signaling the start of his career in Italy. His early career included engagements at the Teatro Nazionale in Bucharest and the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele in Turin (1902).

From 1904 to 1906, he was a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he made his debut as Enrico in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. Afterward, he returned to Italy, and in 1908, he performed at La Scala in Milan in the premiere of Mancinelli’s Paolo e Francesca. He made further notable appearances at La Scala in 1917, particularly in the premiere of Wolf-Ferrari’s Il Segreto di Susanna, where he sang alongside Ninon Vallin.

In the 1926-27 season, he returned to La Scala for the premiere of Arrigo Pedrollo’s Delitto e Castigo. During the 1920s, he continued to be highly successful, performing at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome. His appearances there included the premiere of Mascagni’s Il Piccolo Marat in 1922, Primo Riccitelli’s I Compagnacci in 1923, and Zandonai’s I Cavalieri di Ekebu in 1925.

He retired from his singing career in 1929 and settled in Turin, where he became a lawyer. Later, he was active in Spain as a representative of Italian film societies. In his personal life, his second marriage was to the widow of tenor and architect Peppino Rosselini. Through this marriage, he became the stepfather of the renowned director Roberto Rossellini and the composer Renzo Rossellini, and had a daughter from this union.
