ENZO BOZANO (GENOA, 1884 – ?)

 

 

 

 

Enzo Bozano was an Italian bass active internationally in the early 20th century. His career began in 1905 with performances at the Teatro Sociale in Soresina as Ramfis (Aida) and Padre Guardiano (La forza del destino). In 1906, he appeared across southern Italy, singing Sparafucile (Rigoletto) and King Henry (Lohengrin) in Bari, Brindisi, and Lecce. That same year, he traveled to Mexico City, where he portrayed Saint-Bris in Les Huguenots.

Bozano established a significant presence in North America, appearing in Philadelphia (1907) and New York (1908) in roles such as Ramfis, Lodovico (Otello), and Sparafucile. In 1909 he sang Colline in La bohème in Baltimore. His engagements continued in Italy and abroad, including Modena (1914), Havana and San Juan (1917), and Montreal (1918), where he performed Mefistofele in Faust.

In the 1920s, Bozano was active in Italy, Egypt, and France. Notable appearances included the Politeama Garibaldi in Palermo, where in 1925 he sang Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Padre Guardiano, Alvise (La Gioconda), and Sparafucile. That same season, he performed in Cairo and Alexandria, taking on roles in La bohème, Tosca, and Gianni Schicchi. His last documented appearance was in 1927 at the Palais Méditerranée in Nice as the blind man (Cieco) in Mascagni’s Iris.

Bozano’s repertoire showcased his versatility in Italian and French opera, particularly in basso profundo and character parts.
