GIULIO ROSSI (ROME, 27 OCTOBER, 1862 – VARESE, 9 OCTOBER, 1934)
He studied with Oreste Tomassoni in Rome and made his debut in 1887 in Parma in the opera Jone by E. Petrella. He soon appeared in major Italian theaters and performed at La Scala in 1892, where in 1894 he participated in the premiere of A. Franchetti’s Fior d’Alpe and in 1897 in Il Signor di Pourceaugnac by the same composer. In 1903, he sang in a concert performance of Parsifal at La Scala. As early as 1889, he had taken part in a South American tour with the prima donna Adelina Patti; in 1897, he appeared in South America again. Tours also took him to England, Spain, and Russia.
In 1908, he was appointed to the Metropolitan Opera in New York, debuting as the King in Aida, and remained there until 1919, also performing in the Sunday Night Concerts. He appeared as Sid in the world premiere of Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West (December 10, 1910) and in The Canterbury Pilgrims by R. de Koven (1917). He contributed to the American premieres of several operas, including La Wally (1909), Le Donne curiose by Wolf-Ferrari (1910), Boris Godunov (1913, as Nikitich), Germania by Franchetti (1910), L’Oracolo by Leoni (1915), and Marouf (1917).
