Description

BENEDETTO MAZZACURATI (NAPLES, ITALY, 17 SEPTEMBER, 1898 – SANREMO, ITALY, 29 MARCH, 1984)

He was a pupil of Francesco Serato in Bologna, and graduated in 1915. In Turin he was the first cellist of the Orchestra del Teatro Regio and of the Eiar-Rai (1932-1951) and at the same time he taught at the Turin Conservatory (1926-1942) and ensemble music (1946-1953). Then he held the same courses at the Conservatory of Bologna, a city where he carried out intense activities to promote musical life, becoming, among other things, President of the Philharmonic Academy. He was part of the String Orchestra “I Virtuosi di Roma” (since 1947), of the “Doppio Quintetto” of Turin, of the “EIAR Quartet” of Turin and, with Remy Prìncipe and Nino Rossi, of the “Trio Italiano”. He also carried out an intense concert activity that ended in 1982. Memorable among his compositions are his Burlesca and Canto Nostalgico for cello and piano and his transcriptions for the cello of studies written for the violin by Kreutzer and Fiorillo. The international cello competition held in Turin is dedicated to him.
