ADELAIDE SARACENI (ROSARIO, ARGENTINA, 25 SEPTEMBER, 1895 – MILAN, ITALY, 25 MAY, 1995)

 

 

 

 

She studied under Edwige Ghibaudo at the Liceo Musicale of Pesaro and made her debut in 1919 at the Teatro Mariani in Ravenna as Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. She went on to have a significant career in Italy’s major opera houses, particularly at La Scala in Milan and the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. In 1925, she performed in Holland, and in 1928, she appeared at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. She contributed to the premiere of Wolf-Ferrari’s La vedova scaltra on March 15, 1931, at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, and in 1934, she performed at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in Giuseppe Pietri’s Mariestella. Between 1928 and 1932, she performed regularly at La Scala, where in 1929 she appeared as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro under the baton of Richard Strauss, and in 1930, she portrayed Rautendelein in the Italian premiere of Respighi’s La Campana sommersa, conducted by the composer. In 1933, she performed at the Verona Festival as Marguerite de Valois in Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots. She continued performing in Italy’s major opera theaters until 1935, including appearances in Bergamo and Brescia, and toured Germany and Switzerland with Italian opera troupes. After her active stage career, she became a voice teacher in Milan.
