AUGUSTA CONCATO (VERONA, 1895 – CARATE BRIANZA, 1964)

 

 

 

 

She studied in Verona with Conti Fioroni and made her debut in 1918 at the Teatro Sociale of Brescia in Verdi’s La Forza del Destino. In 1919, she performed as Margherita in Boito’s Mefistofele at the Teatro Comunale of Bologna. Two years later, she appeared there in the premiere of Franco Alfano’s opera La Leggenda di Sakuntala.

In 1921, Arturo Toscanini invited her to La Scala in Milan, where she debuted in 1922 as Giorgetta in Puccini’s Il Tabarro. She returned in 1923 for the première of La Leggenda di Sakuntala. Her other performances in Italy included roles at Teatro Costanzi in Rome (1921, Aida and Manon Lescaut), Teatro Regio in Turin (1920, Suor Angelica), Teatro Regio in Parma (1920, Loreley), and Teatro San Carlo in Naples (1927, Manon Lescaut).

In 1924, she toured Australia with an opera company led by Nellie Melba, performing in Aida and Madama Butterfly. Her career was further marked by guest performances in Monte Carlo, Cairo, Alexandria, Barcelona, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, and Montevideo. She was married to tenor Nino Piccaluga (1890–1973) and retired from the stage around 1938.
