Description
ERNESTINA BENDAZZI-GARULLI (NAPLES, APRIL 18, 1864 – TRIESTE, MAY 12, 1931)
She was the daughter of the well-known soprano Luigia Bendazzi (1829–1901) and the conductor and vocal teacher Benedetto Secchi. She received her vocal training from her father and began performing quite early as a concert singer. She achieved great success as a soloist in Rossini’s Stabat Mater at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome (1884).
Her stage debut took place in 1885 at the Teatro Comunale in Trieste, where she sang the role of Zerline in Fra Diavolo. She also appeared there in Dinorah and Bianca da Cerbia by Antonio Smareglia. That same year, she performed at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna in La Regina di Saba, Dinorah, and Puccini’s Le Villi. In December 1885, she made her debut at La Scala, appearing in Carmen and Meyerbeer’s Robert le Diable. In 1886, she returned to La Scala to sing in the Italian premiere of Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de perles.
During the 1886–87 season, she was a guest artist in Lisbon (Teatro São Carlos) and Berlin (Kroll Opera House). In 1887, she married the tenor Alfonso Garulli, with whom she frequently performed.
In 1894, she sang at the Teatro Lirico in Milan and at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome as Manon in Massenet’s opera of the same name. In 1902, she appeared at the Teatro Politeama in La Spezia, and in 1904, she made a guest appearance at the Théâtre d’Aix-les-Bains.
