Description

JUANITA CARACCIOLO (RAVENNA, 25 OCTOBER, 1888 – MILAN, 5 JULY, 1924)

She received her musical education at the Milan Conservatory, studying under Clelia Sangiorgi. Her operatic debut came in 1908 at the Teatro Politeama in Genoa, where she performed as Nedda in Pagliacci and also appeared in Mascagni’s Le Maschere. In 1911, she married the conductor Giacomo Armani.

For the next twelve years, she performed primarily in Italian provincial theaters. However, in 1920, she achieved a breakthrough with a sensational performance in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. That same year, she garnered further success at the Teatro Costanzi, portraying Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly, Margherita in Boito’s Mefistofele, and participating in the premiere of R. Zandonai’s opera La via delle finestre.

In 1919, she made a guest appearance at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, and in 1920, she performed at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna as Manon Lescaut. That same year, she took on the title role in Catalani’s La Wally at the Teatro Verdi in Pisa. Her international career flourished in 1920 with appearances at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Opera House of Rio de Janeiro, where she performed as Butterfly and Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier. She also appeared at the Teatro Real in Madrid.

In 1922, she made her debut at La Scala in Milan as Eva in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. At La Scala, she also performed as Manon in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut and as Louise in Charpentier’s opera Louise.

Tragically, after falling ill following the birth of a child in the autumn of 1923, she passed away in 1924 at the young age of 36.
