LUISA MALAGRIDA (ADRIA, TREVISO, 5 NOVEMBER, 1920 – ROME, 4 AUGUST, 2008)

She lived in Ferrara from the age of eight, where she was educated before continuing her studies at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In 1945, she made her debut at the Teatro Verdi in Ferrara as Suzel in Mascagni’s Amico Fritz. After performing at various opera houses in the Italian provinces, she went to South Africa for two years in 1948. Upon her return to Italy, she developed a highly successful career, singing on all the major Italian stages. These included the Teatro Comunale in Bologna from 1951, the Teatro San Carlo in Naples and the Genoa Opera House from 1954, and the Teatro Verdi in Trieste from 1955. She also performed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, and in Turin.

In 1956, she made her debut at La Scala in Milan, performing in the premiere of I. Pizzetti’s La figlia di Jorio (in which she had also sung in the premiere on December 4, 1954, at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples). In 1965, she sang the role of Cassandra in the premiere of Pizzetti’s Clitennestra, and in 1963, she appeared at the Piccola Scala in the premiere of Renzo Rossellini’s Il Linguaggio dei Fiori. In 1961, she was heard at La Scala as Giorgetta in Puccini’s Il Tabarro, and in 1971, she performed in Mussorgsky’s Khovantchina.

In 1958, she sang Maddalena in Giordano’s Andrea Chénier at the Teatro Sociale Como, and in 1963, she performed the title role in Mascagni’s Iris at the Teatro Goldoni in Livorno. Also in 1963, she appeared on Italian radio RAI Rome in Adriano Lualdi’s opera Il testamento di Euridice. She made guest appearances at the Monte Carlo Opera in 1964, in Belfast and Dublin the same year, at the Teatro San Carlos in Lisbon, and at the Graz Opera House in 1974.

In the 1963-64 season, she was engaged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where her inaugural role was Leonora in Il Trovatore. Her stage repertoire included Aida, Violetta in La Traviata, the title role in Verdi’s Luisa Miller, Tosca, Butterfly, Mimì in La Bohème, Giorgetta in Il Tabarro, Nedda in Pagliacci, Leah in L. Rocca’s Il Dibuk, Mila and Ornella in Pizzetti’s La figlia di Jorio, Agathe in Der Freischütz, Micaela in Carmen, Maddalena in Andrea Chénier, and Iris in Mascagni’s opera of the same name.

In 1975, she gave her final stage performance at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples as Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, after which she retired and lived in Rome. Her recordings include a complete Pagliacci as Nedda for Cetra, Edipo Re by Leoncavallo (as Giocasta) at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples (1970) for MRE, and a recital for Monarch.
