ANDREA MAGGI (TURIN, 1850 – MILAN, 26 APRIL, 1910)

Andrea Maggi was a renowned actor and tenor, known for his sweet and open physiognomy, majestic and elegant figure, and a strong yet very sweet voice. He quickly rose to prominence in primary companies, soon taking on the role of first actor.

Among his greatest successes were in Conte Rosso by Giacosa and Ferréol by Sardou. He also attempted the challenging roles of Hamlet and Othello, demonstrating his range and ambition. With his commanding presence and the sonority of his voice, he was often compared to great actors like Ernesto Rossi and Tomaso Salvini. However, Maggi was more focused on the external effects of his performances rather than rigorous study and deep artistry.

His most resounding success came in the role of Cyrano de Bergerac, where his blend of charisma and vocal talent left a lasting impression. Additionally, Maggi made several recordings as a tenor for the Gramophone & Typewriter (G&T) and Zonophone labels, capturing his vocal talents for posterity.
