ANTONIO SALVAREZZA (ALESSANDRIA, 14 MAY, 1902 – LEVATA, BOSCO MARENGO, 24 JULY, 1985)
Early Training: He spent his youth in South America and initially worked in Buenos Aires in a business occupation. He then pursued formal music studies under the pedagogue Filippo Florio in Buenos Aires.
Debut: He made his operatic debut in 1937 at the Teatro Municipale in Rio de Janeiro as the Duke in Rigoletto. During the 1938-39 season, he performed in Lucia di Lammermoor, La Bohème, and Madame Butterfly.
Career: He gained significant acclaim in 1939 when he performed the role of Arturo in Bellini’s I Puritani at La Scala in Milan. His successful tenure at La Scala continued until 1946. Throughout World War II, he appeared at major Italian opera houses, including the Rome Opera House (1938-50). In 1943, he made a notable guest appearance at the Vienna State Opera.
Further Performances: Post-war, he performed in Chicago and Philadelphia in 1946. He also had a prominent presence at the Cambridge Theatre in London from 1946-48, where he sang roles such as Cavaradossi in Tosca, the Duke in Rigoletto, and Rodolfo in La Bohème. His performances and concert tours extended to France, Holland, Belgium, and Austria. In 1952, he appeared at the Maggio Musicale in Florence.
He also performed at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona, and at opera houses in Geneva, Monte Carlo, Cairo, and Madrid. Notably, in 1939, he took part in the premiere of Giuseppe Mulè’s La Zolfara at the Rome Opera House. He returned to the Rome Opera House in 1959 to perform the role of Cavaradossi in Tosca.
