AUGUSTO FERRAUTO (NAPLES, 20 JUNE, 1903 – NAPLES, 14 JUNE, 1986)

 

 

 

 

He received his education in his hometown Naples. After his debut at the Teatro Ponchielli in Cremona as Rodolfo in G. Puccini’s La Bohème, he sang at prominent Italian opera houses. Notably, in the 1935-1938 seasons, he performed at the Opera House in Rome as Luigi in Il Tabarro, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly. In 1942, he took part in the Italian premiere of O. Gerster’s Enoch Arden. He also appeared at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna in 1938 as Enzo in La Gioconda by A. Ponchielli, at the Teatro Comunale in Florence in 1939, and at the Teatro alla Scala during the 1940-1942 seasons.

His career reached its peak in the 1944-1946 seasons when he performed at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. He also toured with the Teatro San Carlo ensemble in London in 1946. His extensive repertoire included roles such as Radames in Aida, Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Calaf in Turandot, Enzo in La Gioconda, Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, Canio in Pagliacci, and Don José in Carmen. He also performed in contemporary operas by Zandonai, Rocca, Malipiero, and other modern works. Notably, in 1935 he sang in the premiere of Giuseppe Mulè’s Liolà at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, and in 1938, he appeared at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa in the opera Donata by Gaspare Scuderi. After retiring from the stage, he worked as a singing teacher in Naples.
