EMILIO PEREA (MILAN, 25 MAY, 1884 – MILAN, 1946)

 

 

 

 

He studied at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi and with Nino Cairone in Milan. His operatic career began in 1904 with his debut at the Teatro Sociale in Varese in Donizetti’s Linda di Chamounix. He went on to perform in Brescia and at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo. In 1907, he married the Italian soprano Fausta Labia (1870-1935), and his career flourished with guest appearances at major Italian opera houses and internationally at the Teatro Real in Madrid and Teatro Liceo in Barcelona.

In 1906, he performed at the Circo Orrin in Mexico City and toured South America, singing in Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Montevideo. In 1907, he appeared at the Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon in Leoncavallo’s Zazà. By 1910, he was performing Gounod’s Faust at the Teatro Municipale of Piacenza, and in 1911 he made guest appearances at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples as Araquil in Massenet’s La Navarraise and as Giorgio in Giordano’s Marcella. In 1913, he returned to Rio de Janeiro to sing in Lohengrin and Boito’s Mefistofele, and that same year performed Lohengrin again at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. His portrayal of Parsifal at the Teatro Costanzi in 1914 and Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia at La Scala in 1916 were among his celebrated roles. Perea retired from the stage in 1926.
