Description

FERDINANDO CINISELLI (MORTARA, NEAR MILAN, 14 MARCH, 1893 – MORTARA, NEAR MILAN, 30 JANUARY, 1954)

He made his debut at the Teatro Coccia in 1919. In 1920, he sang the Duke in Rigoletto and appeared in the premiere of La Rondine at the Teatro Massimo. During the same year, he appeared in Madrid and at the Teatro Colón as the Duke, Alfredo in La Traviata, and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, and also performed in Rio de Janeiro as Alfredo alongside Claudia Muzio and as Pinkerton. At the latter opera house, he again sang the Duke, Alfredo in La Traviata, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Des Grieux in Manon, and Faust in Mefistofele.

Further successful guest appearances followed in Barcelona and Bologna, where in 1921 he sang Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi and Ramiro in La Cenerentola at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. There, he also appeared in 1928 as Faust in Mefistofele and, in 1930, in La via della finestra.

In 1923, he was engaged by La Scala in Milan, making his debut as Fenton in Falstaff. During the following two seasons at La Scala, where his career was promoted by Arturo Toscanini, he enjoyed considerable success, notably as Tamino in The Magic Flute.

He subsequently made guest appearances at the Teatro Costanzi in 1923–24, again as Faust in Mefistofele and as the Duke in Rigoletto, and also performed in Naples and Paris. In 1929, he toured Germany and Switzerland with Max Sauter’s company. He also appeared in Ravenna and Bologna, where he performed alongside Conchita Supervia in La Cenerentola, at the Teatro di San Carlo, and at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.

At the beginning of the 1930s, he retired from the stage and lived a secluded life in his native town. He possessed a purely lyrical and beautifully trained tenor voice.
