Trained at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, he began his career with early success that led him to Germany, where he joined the Berlin State Opera in 1937. He also performed in Leipzig, Danzig, Hamburg, Vienna, and at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. In 1944, he returned to Italy and established a successful career, particularly at the Rome Opera and Teatro La Fenice in Venice. In 1950, he sang Ferrando in Così fan tutte at the Glyndebourne Festival, and in 1960, he portrayed the title role in Monteverdi’s Orfeo at the Frankfurt Opera. Towards the end of his long career, he transitioned to performing heroic roles. He also appeared in sound films.
