GIOVANNI MALIPIERO (PADUA, ITALY, 21. 4. 1906 – MILANO, ITALY, 11. 4. 1970)

 

 

 

 

He began his career at the Teatro of Lonigo as the Duke in Rigoletto. At the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, he performed in 1935 as Lindoro in G. Rossini’s L’italiana in Algeri. In 1936, he appeared at the Teatro Regio in Parma as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, and in the 1936-1937 season, he made his debut at La Scala in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, achieving great success. In 1938, he sang the role of Jean in J. Massenet’s Le Jongleur de Notre Dame at La Scala, reprising this role with much acclaim in 1948 at Teatro La Fenice in Venice.

In 1947, he returned to La Scala as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, opposite Lina Pagliughi, and in 1948, he performed in Le pauvre matelot by Darius Milhaud. During the 1937-1939 seasons and again in 1947, he appeared at the Arena di Verona in star roles, including Faust in C. Gounod’s Faust, Romeo in Giulietta e Romeo by R. Zandonai, Fernando in G. Donizetti’s La Favorita, and Faust in A. Boito’s Mefistofele. In 1952, he took part in the premiere of Vito Frazzi’s Don Chisciotte in Florence. Toward the end of his career, he sang Beppe in Pagliacci at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma in 1955, having previously performed in the premiere of A. Lualdi’s La Luna di Cairibi there in 1953. He continued performing until 1962, with his last appearances including Malatestino in R. Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini in Bologna in 1961 and a final performance at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in 1962.
