Description
GIUSEPPE GODONO (NAPLES, 4 SEPTEMBER, 1876 – ROME, 22 DECEMBER, 1963)
He made his debut in 1902 at the Teatro Bellini in Naples. His first role was Alfredo in La Traviata. In the same year, he performed in Rigoletto and Cavalleria Rusticana at the same theater.
Godono’s first major international success came when he sang Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore at the Teatro Real in Madrid, also in 1902. In 1903, he appeared at the Teatro Biondo in Palermo as Elvino in La Sonnambula.
He continued performing on opera stages until 1912, after which he shifted his focus to recording Neapolitan songs, a genre closely associated with his native region. Godono was a close friend of the legendary tenor Enrico Caruso, which likely influenced his later career in the popular Neapolitan repertoire.
