NARCISO DEL RY (PISA, 1879 – ROME, 1939)

Already as a boy, his musical talent was evident. However, he initially worked in a typography. The baritone Lelio Casini, hailing from Pisa, took it upon himself to educate him and became his teacher. In 1901, he debuted at the Teatro Grande in Brescia as Riccardo in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera. This was followed by appearances in leading Italian theaters in provinces such as Savona, Vicenza, and Lucca.

In 1910, he performed extensively in Cairo, achieving special success. During this time, he sang roles like the Duke in Rigoletto, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Hagenbach in Catalani’s La Wally, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Wilhelm Meister in A. Thomas’s Mignon, Almaviva in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Faust in Boito’s Mefistofele, and Dmitri in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov.

In 1912, he guested at the Teatro Apollo in Rome and in Reggio Emilia. In 1913, he appeared at the Teatro Politeama in Pisa, and in 1915, he was heard at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and the Teatro Regio in Parma as Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia.

During the 1916-17 season, he spent time in South America, where he was particularly celebrated at the opera house in São Paulo, singing 15 major roles from the Italian repertoire, including in Gomes’s Salvator Rosa. In 1928, he undertook a significant concert tour through India and Indonesia, during which he performed in 44 concerts. He continued his career on Italian stages until 1936 and later lived in Milan, eventually settling in Rome.
