NILO OSSANI (FAENZA, 7 NOVEMBER, 1912 – TURIN, 13 JANUARY, 1997)

His real name was Giuseppe Dal Pane. In 1938, he won a competition for young voices in Milan and made his debut as a fisherman in G. Rossini’s Guglielmo Tell at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in 1939. He then continued his career in numerous Italian opera houses, including the prestigious Teatro alla Scala.

In 1945, following the end of the Second World War, he transitioned to light music and operetta, adopting the stage name Nilo Ossani, under which he achieved equally positive results. He was featured on the radio and began recording for La Voce del Padrone, which became his official record label for many years.

His popularity reached the United States in 1950 when he was chosen to represent Italy at the World Song and Popular Melody Festival in New York. There, he performed accompanied by an orchestra conducted by Percy Faith, singing the famous Torna a Surriento by Ernesto De Curtis.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, he also appeared in operetta performances with the Compagnia di Nuto Navarrini and participated in television variety shows for RAI in 1962. He retired from the stage in the 1970s. He was a close friend of Emilio Renzi, who later became better known under the pseudonym Aldo Visconti.
