ARMIDA SENATRA (FOLIGNO, 1888 – ? 1973)

 

 

 

 

She received her musical training in Rome under Romolo Jacobacci. Her early claim to fame was that, at the age of thirteen, she was already performing works by the violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini. Joseph Joachim attended one of these performances and considered her particularly gifted.

Senatra performed internationally, giving concerts throughout Europe. Notable appearances include:

1907 (7 February): Oslo, Brødrene Hals Concert Hall — she performed, among other works, Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata and Sarasate’s Habanera. The performance was received with great enthusiasm by both the audience and the critics. She was accompanied by Johan Backer Lunde.

1908 (17 March): Copenhagen.

1909 (12 February): Oslo, Masonic Lodge — works by Arcangelo Corelli and Niccolò Paganini.

1912 (May): London.

1919: Concert at the Società del Quartetto, Milan.

1923 (10 January): Leipzig — performed Zandonai’s Concerto romantico (1919) with the Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler. She returned to this work frequently in later years.

A number of recordings by Senatra have been preserved, documenting her activity not only as a violinist but also as a conductor.
