Description

MARIO GILION (JEAN ANTOINE MARIUS GHIGLIONE) (MARSEILLE, BOUCHES-DU-RHÔNE, OCTOBER 18, 1868 – MARSEILLE, NOVEMBER 24, 1914)

He was the son of Charles Ghiglione (Lucéram, Alpes-Maritimes, c. 1825 – Marseille, May 4, 1901), a soap manufacturer, and Marie Camille Rebaudo (Castelvittorio, Liguria, Italy, c. 1840 – Marseille, January 16, 1896).

He married in Marseille on September 25, 1894, Delphine Clarisse Clotilde Mutschler (Marseille, August 5, 1874 – after 1914).

Born in the South of France, he began his operatic career under the name Mario Gilion. He made his debut in 1901 (?) at the Teatro Sociale in Monza as Vasco da Gama in Meyerbeer’s L’Africaine. Later that year, he achieved considerable success in Modena, where he appeared as Raoul in Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots and as Arnoldo in Rossini’s Guillaume Tell — two roles that became closely associated with his career.

In 1901, he also performed at the Royal Opera House in Budapest, followed by engagements at the major Italian theatres of Venice, Genoa, and Turin.

His international career included appearances in Bucharest (1904), the Teatro Real in Madrid and Odessa (1905), and a highly acclaimed performance at the Warsaw Opera House in Guillaume Tell, where he appeared alongside the celebrated baritone Mattia Battistini.

In 1907, he performed at the Teatro Politeama in Buenos Aires. He later appeared at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice (1910) and the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples (1911). From 1910 to 1911, he was also active at the Paris Opéra, where he sang Arnoldo in Rossini’s Guillaume Tell and Radamès in Verdi’s Aida.

His repertoire was particularly associated with the great heroic tenor roles of the French and Italian repertory, especially Arnoldo (Guillaume Tell) and Raoul (Les Huguenots), which showcased his powerful dramatic voice and vocal temperament.
