Description

MARIO SAMMARCO (PALERMO, 13 DECEMBER, 1868 – MILAN, 24 JANUARY 1930)

Having studied with Antioni Cantelli in Milano, Sammarco made his debut in Palermo as Valentin in ‘’Faust’’. In 1894 he was at the Teatro dal Verme in G. Puccini’s ‘’Le Villi’’. The same year he made his La Scala debut, appearing there two seasons later as Carlo Gérard in the world premiere of U. Giordano’s ‘’Andrea Chenier’’. Sammarco appeared in leading baritone roles in several world premieres, including Leoncavallo’s ‘’Zaza’’ (1900), Franchetti’s ‘’Germania’’ (1902) and Victor Herbert’s ‘’Natoma’’ (1911). He was frequently heard at Covent Garden, South America, and with the Chicago and Philadelphia Operas. His repertoire ran the gamut of Verdi roles as well as, particularly later in his career, verismo parts.
