EWA BANDROWSKA-TURSKA (KRAKÓW, 20 MAY, 1894 — WARSAW, 25 JUNE, 1979)

 

 

 

 

The niece of tenor Alexander von Bandrowski (1860–1913), she received her musical education from Helena Zboinska-Ruszkowska in Warsaw. She debuted as a concert soprano in Warsaw in 1919 and made her operatic debut in 1920 at the Warsaw Opera as Marguerite in Gounod’s Faust. In 1921, she joined the Lwów (Lvov) Opera, but her career was interrupted by a prolonged illness.

In 1925, she resumed her performances at the Theater of Poznań (Posen) and, in 1929, became a member of the Warsaw Opera. That same year, she made a guest appearance in Hamburg. In 1939, she performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, singing the title role in Lakmé and Violetta in La Traviata.

Her guest appearances included the Vienna State Opera (1933), and the opera houses of Budapest, Zurich, Amsterdam, and Stockholm (1936), as well as theaters in Nice and Brussels. In the United States, she performed with the Chicago Opera and as a concert singer at Carnegie Hall in New York. She also gave concerts in London (1931) and Vienna (1937) and toured Scandinavia and the Soviet Union.

From 1947 to 1949, she was engaged again by the Warsaw Opera. Subsequently, she worked as a pedagogue, first in Cracow and later at the College of Music in Warsaw.

Her repertoire included roles such as Elsa in Lohengrin, Marguerite in Faust, Manon in Massenet’s Manon, Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Violetta in La Traviata, Mimì in La Bohème, Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, and Tatiana in Eugene Onegin.
