MATYLDA POLINSKA-LEWICKA (LVIV, JANUARY 23, 1881 – SAINT-SAUVEUR, OCTOBER 17, 1968)

 

 

 

 

She studied singing with Władysław Bogdański in Lviv and later with Adelina Paschalis and Auguste Souvestre in Dresden. She made her operatic debut in 1909 at the Grand Opera House in Boston in the role of Musetta in Puccini’s La Bohème. In the following years, she appeared at the Lviv Opera (1910–1911), the Volksoper in Vienna (1911–1912), and the Neue Oper in Hamburg (1912–1913).

In 1915, she debuted at the National Theatre in Warsaw in the title role of Madame Butterfly, with which she remained associated until 1931. During the 1925–1926 season, she sang as a guest at the Polish Theatre in Katowice. She gained particular recognition for her performances in Wagnerian roles—Sieglinde in Die Walküre, Elsa in Lohengrin, and Elisabeth in Tannhäuser—as well as for her portrayals of Desdemona in Otello and the title roles in Tosca and Halka. She recorded the role of Halka in 1929 for the Syrena-Electro label.

In 1931, she retired from the opera stage and devoted herself to theatrical work and teaching at the Institute of Music. After World War II, she taught at the Karol Kurpiński Music School (1945–1947) and at State Secondary Music School No. 1 in Warsaw (1947–1951). In 1964, she emigrated to Canada.
