Description
JOSEF MANN (LVIV, UKRAINE, 24 FEBRUARY, 1883 – BERLIN, 5 SEPTEMBER, 1921)
He made his debut in 1909 in Stanislaw Moniuszko’s opera Halka at Lviv, performing the role of Jontek. In 1910, he appeared again at the same opera house in Verdi’s Aida, where his partner was Irene Heller. At the beginning of the 1910-1911 season, he became a member of the Lviv Opera for two years. He continued his music studies with Guagni in Milan.
From 1912 to 1915, he was engaged at the Vienna Volksoper. In the 1915-1916 season, he sang at the Royal Court Theatre in Wiesbaden, where he appeared in the premiere of Julius Bittner’s opera Das Höllisch Gold. From 1916 to 1919, he worked at the Land Theatre in Darmstadt.
Guest performances took him to major opera houses in Prague, Bucharest, Dresden, Stuttgart, Frankfurt am Main, Berlin, Munich, Basel, and Vienna. In 1918, he signed a contract with the Vienna Staatsoper, and in 1919, he performed the title role in the Berlin premiere of Hans Pfitzner’s opera Palestrina.
Tragically, he died onstage at the Berlin State Opera during a performance of Aida, preventing him from fulfilling his contract with the Metropolitan Opera in 1921, where he was scheduled to take over many roles for the ailing Enrico Caruso.
