WICTOR (VIKTOR) BRÉGY (KIEV, AUGUST 21 / SEPTEMBER 3, 1903 – WARSAW, MAY 20, 1976)

 

 

 

 

He was of Polish origin and moved from Ukraine to Warsaw in 1920. There, he studied at the university and trained his voice with Maria Lubkowska and Adela Comte-Wilgacka. In 1927, he joined the Opera House in Warsaw, where he sang as the first tenor for the next four years. In 1931, he was engaged by the Opéra-Comique in Paris, making his debut as Gérald in Delibes’ Lakmé. He remained with the Opéra-Comique until 1933.

From 1933 to 1939, he appeared primarily in Swiss theatres, including the Municipal Theatres in Bern, Zurich, and Basel, and also enjoyed a successful career as a concert singer. In 1933, he performed at the Vienna State Opera and was a guest at the Vienna People’s Opera during the 1935-1936 season. Additionally, he made guest appearances in Berlin, Prague, and Stockholm.

During World War II, he stayed in Warsaw and played a crucial role in rebuilding Polish musical life. In 1945, he became a professor at the Chopin Conservatoire in Warsaw and later served as the director of the Warsaw Opera. In 1946, he gave a concert in Bern, Switzerland. He founded an opera studio in Gdansk in 1950 and became a professor at the music college in Warsaw in 1957.
