MARIA GIUDICE (LISBON, PORTUGAL, 12 JUNE 1870 – MILAN, ITALY, 17 JUNE 1953)

 

 

 

 

Her real name was Maria Júdice da Costa. She studied with Melchior Olivier in Lisbon and made her debut there in 1890 as a contralto. During the 1891-1892 season, she performed the roles of Amneris in Aida and Azucena in Il Trovatore at the Teatro Tacón in Havana. In 1893, she made a guest appearance in Buenos Aires, where she took part in the South American premiere of Verdi’s Falstaff as Dame Quickly. In 1897, she was engaged by La Scala in Milan, making her debut as Eboli in Verdi’s Don Carlo. The following year, she made a guest appearance at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan and returned to Argentina.

After 1900, she expanded her repertoire to include dramatic soprano roles. She later married the baritone Guglielmo Caruson, though they eventually separated. In 1907, she toured Chile and performed as Brünnhilde in Die Walküre at the Teatro Regio in Parma. During the 1907-1908 season, she made guest appearances in Havana and other Cuban cities with an Italian opera troupe that included Nicola Zerola and Giuseppe Agostini. In 1909, she performed at the Teatro Real in Madrid. After her stage career, she worked as a teacher in Milan and later resided at the Casa di Riposo per Musicisti, the retirement home for musicians founded by Verdi, in Milan from 1935. Maria Júdice da Costa was related to the Italian family of singers Lo Giudice, which includes singers Silvio Costa Lo Giudice, Franco Lo Giudice, and Pietro Lo Giudice.
