Description

REGINA PACINI (REGINA ISABEL LUISA PACINI QUINTERO) (LISBON, 6 JANUARY, 1871 – BUENOS AIRES, 18 SEPTEMBER, 1965)

She was born to the renowned baritone José Pacini. She studied singing with the pedagogue Valani in Lisbon and made her debut in 1888 at the Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon as Amina in Bellini’s La Sonnambula. Her exceptional talent quickly won her acclaim, and she became one of the most celebrated sopranos of her time.

From 1888 to 1904, she enjoyed great success in Lisbon, frequently performing at the Teatro San Carlo. Her international career flourished with numerous guest appearances across Europe and the Americas. In 1889, she performed at the Teatro Manzoni in Milan, Her Majesty’s Theatre in London, and in Palermo. She was a prominent presence at the Teatro Real in Madrid from 1890 to 1905.

Her engagements included appearances in St. Petersburg and Warsaw during the 1894-95 season, and she performed at the opera houses in Montevideo and Buenos Aires in 1899. At Covent Garden in London, she was notably paired with Enrico Caruso. After the turn of the century, she appeared at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, as well as in Florence, Rome, and at La Scala.

In 1905, she was one of the stars of the Sonzogno season at the Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt in Paris. Her illustrious career reached a new chapter in 1907 when she married the Argentine diplomat Marcelo T. de Alvear, who later became President of Argentina (1922-28). Following her marriage, she retired from the stage and moved to Buenos Aires, where she significantly influenced the music scene in Argentina.
