His real name was Poldi Avramescu. He was born into a Jewish family and studied singing in Vienna under Otto Iro and Kate Naether-Osten. He began his stage career at the Vienna State Opera during the 1920-1923 seasons. In 1926, he was engaged by the West German broadcasting company in Cologne, where he gained unusual popularity for roles such as Rodolfo in La Bohème, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Lohengrin, Riccardo in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, Jason in Cherubini’s Medea, Don José in Carmen, Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Tamino in Die Zauberflöte. He also performed at other German radio stations, including those in Frankfurt a. M., Stuttgart, Munich, Vienna, and Prague, and had a significant career as an operetta singer. In 1933, he was dismissed from the German broadcasting company due to his Jewish heritage. He was engaged by the Opera House in Lucerne for the 1935-36 season, and appeared at the Opera House of Teplitz-Schönau in the Czech Republic during the 1937-38 season. He then made guest appearances in Amsterdam and became active in education before emigrating to the USA, where he continued to give recitals until he died suddenly during a US tour.
