FEDOR POLIAEV (CHIZHEVKA, VORONEZH, RUSSIA, 1873 – KIEV, UKRAINE, 1939)

 

 

 

He studied singing at the St. Petersburg Music and Drama Courses under E. Rapgof, in the class of R. Nouvel-Nordi. He made his debut in 1908 at the St. Petersburg People’s House and went on to perform in Kharkov (starting in 1910), Kiev, Odessa, Tiflis, Baku (1923), and Voronezh (1925). His repertoire included roles such as Valentin (Faust by C. Gounod), Escamillo (Carmen by G. Bizet), Iago (Otello by G. Verdi), Georges Germont (La Traviata by G. Verdi), Tonio and Silvio (Pagliacci by R. Leoncavallo).

In addition to his stage career, he began teaching in Tiflis and later in Baku and Kiev. From 1925, he taught at the Kiev Conservatory, and from 1936 to 1939, he headed the Department of Solo Singing. Among his pupils were A. Arkhimovich, P. F. Gaichuk (1937-1941), M. Kvaliashvili, L. D. Lobanova, I. I. Maslennikova (1938-1939), I. Polyakov, N. Savchenko, and N. S. Fokin.
