Description
GEORGY BAKLANOV (GEORGES BAKLANOFF) (ALFONS GEORGE BAKKIS) (RIGA, LATVIA, 23 DECEMBER, 1880 – BASEL, SWITZERLAND, 6 DECEMBER, 1938)
He was a distinguished baritone with a remarkable international career. After studying with Martin Petz in Kiev in 1900, he continued his vocal training under I. P. Pryanishnikov, who introduced him to Milan and the conductor Vittorio Vanza, who further refined his voice.
He made his opera debut in Kiev in 1904 as Amonasro in Aida, and subsequently toured with a private opera troupe in various cities. In 1905, he debuted at Sergei Zimin’s Opera Theatre as Demon in Rubinstein’s Demon.
From 1905 to 1909, he was a prominent member of the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre, appearing in 14 operas. In 1910, he performed at Covent Garden, London, and in 1911, he made a notable impression at Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and Paris.
His career continued to flourish with significant appearances at the Vienna Staatsoper, Komische Oper in Berlin, and in Monte Carlo, where he performed alongside notable artists such as Enrico Caruso and Salomea Kruszelnicka. He also made impactful appearances in Boston, Chicago, and New York.
From 1917 to 1928, he was a principal member of the Chicago Opera. His career spanned major cities including Milan, Budapest, Leipzig, Philadelphia, Warsaw, and more. Known for his extraordinary voice and dramatic talent, he was often compared to Battistini and excelled in both baritone and bass repertoires.
Baklanov’s contributions to opera included roles in the world premieres of Rachmaninov’s Francesca da Rimini and The Miserly Knight. After his performing career, he lived in Berlin and then Basel until his death.
