Description

PAVEL ANDREEV (1874, 25/2 (9/3), OSMINO, SAINT PETERSBURG PROVINCE – 1950, 15/9, LENINGRAD)

In 1903, he graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied under S. Gabel. That same year, he made his debut as the Demon at the St. Petersburg National House, marking his entry onto the opera stage. Beginning in 1907, Andreev performed at the Mariinsky Theater (known since 1920 as the Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet) for approximately 40 years. His roles included Ruslan (Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila), Prince Igor (Borodin’s Prince Igor), Boris Godunov (Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov), the Demon (Rubinstein’s The Demon), Holofernes (Serov’s Judith), Petr (Serov’s Enemy Force), Mizgir (Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Snow Maiden), Tomskii (Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades), Escamillo (Bizet’s Carmen), and Peter I (Lortzing’s The Tsar and the Carpenter).

Andreev also appeared in concert recitals, performing operatic arias, art songs, and Russian folksongs. His voice was resonant, with a beautiful timbre, and was distinguished by a wide range. He performed both baritone and bass roles, excelling especially in the Russian repertoire, where he was most successful in epic roles. Beginning in 1919, he engaged in teaching, and in 1926, he became a professor at the Leningrad Conservatory. He was awarded the Order of Lenin in recognition of his contributions.
