He trained as a singer in St. Petersburg under I. I. Palechek, followed by studies in Italy with Scoliar. His debut came in 1889 as a comprimario at the Panaevsky Opera House in St. Petersburg, where he performed in supporting roles for five years. In 1895, he joined the prestigious Mariinsky Theatre as a principal bass-baritone, a position he held until 1927.

In addition to his work at the Mariinsky, he participated in Sergei Diaghilev’s Russian Seasons in Paris and London from 1908 to 1910 and again in 1914. Over his career, he performed in around 70 operas and operettas, frequently sharing the stage with notable singers like Nikolay Figner, Fyodor Chaliapin, Maria Bronskaya, Ivan Alchevsky, Ivan Damaev, and Vasily Ershov. Renowned as one of Russia’s foremost interpreters of Wagner, he became one of the best-known Wagnerian singers in Russia during his time.
