PAVEL TIKHONOV (ST. PETERSBURG, 27 FEBRUARY, 1877 – MOSCOW, 23 MARCH, 1944)
In 1900, he graduated from the Law Faculty of St. Petersburg University. From 1903 to 1904, he studied voice with Gabel. Beginning in 1905, he was a soloist at the People’s House Opera in St. Petersburg and, between 1907 and 1911, performed in the opera houses of Kiev and Odessa. Starting in 1911, he became a soloist with the Bolshoi Theater, where he worked intermittently until 1928. During a hiatus from 1917 to 1919, he was in Odessa, where he completed his studies at the Odessa Conservatory in 1918.
He was a prominent figure in the Bolshoi Theater, serving as the chairman of the first corporation of solo artists and playing a key role in establishing the music and vocal studio at the theater. In 1923–1924, he trained at the Opera Studio of K.S. Stanislavsky.
In 1924, he began teaching, and from 1928 to 1933, he served as an associate professor at the Vocal Faculty of the Moscow Conservatory. In 1933, he became a professor and dean of the Belarusian Conservatory. During World War II, he headed the vocal department at the combined Saratov and Moscow conservatories in Saratov.
Throughout his career, he performed alongside renowned artists such as Feodor Chaliapin, Leonid Sobinov, Antonina Nezhdanova, Ksenia Derzhinskaya, Nadezhda Obukhova, Vasily Petrov, Leonid Savransky, and Sergei Migai.
