JEAN ISAAC SCHWILLER (MITAU, RUSSIAN EMPIRE [NOW JELGAVA, LATVIA], OCTOBER 31, 1885 – ?)

 

 

 

 

Schwiller studied under Julius Klengel at the Royal Conservatory in Leipzig, then at the Brussels Conservatory, under Hugo Becker in Frankfurt, and under Alfred Massau in Verviers, Belgium. In 1907, he helped debut a new violoncello sonata by Bruno Muggelini in London. The same year, he was the cello soloist in Édouard Lalo’s Cello Concerto in D minor, with the Henry Wood Symphony Orchestra conducted by Henry Wood at a Prom Concert at Queen’s Hall, London. He successfully toured both Europe and the United States (first in 1908) and recorded prolifically for the Columbia label between 1909 and 1913, as well as for other labels like Edison.
