ADELAIDE ANDREYEVA VON SKILONDZ (ALSO ANDREJEWA DE SKILONDZ; SAINT PETERSBURG, 27 JANUARY [O.S. 15 JANUARY], 1882 – STOCKHOLM, 5 APRIL, 1969)

She was educated at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and made her debut in 1904 at the Court Opera (Mariinsky Theater) in St. Petersburg. She quickly gained recognition and, in 1909, achieved particular success in the premiere of The Golden Cockerel by Rimsky-Korsakov, performing the role of the Queen of Shemakha. In 1910, she was engaged at the Court Opera in Berlin as Frieda Hempel’s successor, where she remained until 1914. Her repertoire there included roles such as the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, Gilda in Rigoletto, Violetta in La Traviata, Elvira in La Muette de Portici by Auber, and Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss.

When World War I broke out in 1914, she moved to Stockholm, where she became the leading coloratura soprano at the Royal Opera, performing all her roles in Swedish until 1920. Afterward, she continued to give guest performances until 1925, and from then until 1930, she focused on concert and oratorio performances, appearing in Sweden, Belgium, Holland, London, and New York. In recognition of her contributions, she received the Swedish order Litteris et Artibus in 1917 and became a member of the Swedish Music Academy in 1930.

Following her performance career, she lived in Stockholm as a highly esteemed vocal teacher. Among her notable students were internationally recognized artists such as Kim Borg, Isa Quensel, Eva Prytz, Kerstin Meyer, Elisabeth Söderström, Stina-Britta Melander, Carl-Axel Hallgren, and Inga Sundström.
