ARNOLDO GEORGEWSKY (GEORGEVSKI) (CHIȘINĂU, BESSARABIAN GOVERNORATE OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE; NOW MOLDOVA, 26 DECEMBER, 1889 – NEW JERSEY, USA, 12 DECEMBER, 1960)

 

 

 

 

He was born into a Jewish family and and his real name was Aron Izik Steinberg. He began his vocal training with K. Kotsebu. Later, he refined his singing skills under the guidance of the renowned tenor Giuseppe Anselmi in Milan. His career included performances in various prestigious venues and cities.

In 1910, he appeared in Genoa and then performed at Sibiryakov’s Theatre in Odessa from 1910 to 1912. In 1912, he sang in St. Petersburg at Moon-Park and also in Vilna. He continued to perform in Rome during 1914-1915 and later in Bucharest in 1929-1930. His most acclaimed role was Faust in Charles Gounod’s opera of the same name, where his portrayal was particularly celebrated.

In 1934, he emigrated to the United States. From 1939, he taught vocal music at Isidor Granov’s music school, and from the early 1940s, he served as the cantor of the “Mount Zion” synagogue in Philadelphia.
